- Area of focus:
- Education. Education in Haiti or for Haitians and diasporan communities, particularly related to the curricular issues of poverty reduction efforts.
- Haiti Involvement:
- Not currently. I did my dissertation work in education (Curriculum and Instruction) with Haitian adolescent immigrants, and I spent a lot of time researching / getting background knowledge by visiting Haiti and observing in Haitian schools, interviewing teachers, professors and school administrators there. I also volunteered with Haitian secondary teachers for three weeks in Jeremie with their professional development needs......this is work I would enjoy continuing in a sustainable way. I am interested in Haitian children's and adolescents' perceptions of, and thoughts about, what is "important" to be successful academically and in their lives. I am also interested in sustainable Literacy efforts in Haiti or among Haitian diasporan communities. I don't want to tell people what I think they need though --- they need to tell me what they think they need, and their thoughts on how to get what they need. Any amount of training that "I" have in educational organization and management, process and procedure, will not help others if the stakeholders don't have buy-in from the start. I could potentially be a good facilitator.... although I have no experience yet with the Open Space method, so I have a lot to learn this January!
